When I help travelers decide whether Rwanda is right for them, I usually start by explaining that I don’t see Rwanda as a destination for just one type of safari. I can build a Rwanda journey around mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzees and primates, classic savannah wildlife, hiking, culture, scenery, or a combination of several experiences.
I particularly recommend Rwanda to travelers who value a well-rounded journey and don’t want their entire trip to revolve around traditional game drives. Volcanoes National Park gives me the opportunity to plan gorilla and golden monkey experiences, while Akagera offers savannah wildlife and Big Five opportunities. Nyungwe adds rainforest, chimpanzees, primates, birds and the canopy walkway. Visit Rwanda
I also want to correct one common misconception: Rwanda isn’t only about gorillas. If gorilla trekking isn’t your priority, I can still build a worthwhile journey around Akagera, Nyungwe, Kigali, Lake Kivu, culture and outdoor experiences.
At the same time, I wouldn’t recommend Rwanda simply because it is fashionable or because someone told you that you “must” see gorillas. Gorilla trekking requires a reasonable level of physical effort, and the experience is very different from a traditional vehicle safari.
My advice is to decide what you want to experience first, then let me determine which parts of Rwanda deserve your time.

Gorilla trekking is one of Rwanda’s best-known experiences, but I don’t want you to judge the entire country through that one activity.
I can combine gorilla trekking with savannah wildlife in Akagera, primate experiences in Nyungwe, time in Kigali or relaxation around Lake Kivu. Rwanda’s official tourism information describes Volcanoes, Akagera and Nyungwe as very different national-park experiences. Visit Rwanda
If gorillas are your dream, I’ll make them central.
If they’re not, I’ll build around what actually interests you.
This is one of the most important decisions I want travelers to make honestly.
Gorilla trekking is not a vehicle-based wildlife experience. I may need to walk through steep, muddy or uneven forest terrain, and the time spent trekking can vary considerably depending on where the gorilla family is located.
I therefore ask travelers about their fitness, walking ability and expectations before I recommend the experience.
I don’t want someone booking gorilla trekking because of a photograph and only discovering afterward that the physical demands aren’t what they expected.
If your dream is spending several days driving across vast savannah landscapes looking for large herds and predators, I would compare Rwanda with Kenya or Tanzania before making a decision.
Rwanda’s safari experience is more varied.
Akagera provides the country’s classic savannah safari environment, with Big Five opportunities, wetlands, lakes and boat experiences, while Volcanoes and Nyungwe provide very different forest and primate experiences. Visit Rwanda
I see that variety as an advantage when it matches what you want, but I wouldn’t pretend the experiences are identical.
One of the mistakes I see is trying to squeeze Rwanda into an unnecessarily short itinerary.
If gorilla trekking is your main reason for visiting, I can create a focused trip around Volcanoes National Park.
But if you also want Akagera, Nyungwe, Kigali or Lake Kivu, I would give each region enough time to feel worthwhile.
Rwanda’s official tourism information emphasizes how accessible the country can be by road, but the fact that destinations are connected doesn’t mean I should rush between them. Visit Rwanda
Rwanda is known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” and I think the scenery deserves to be part of the itinerary rather than something you simply see through a vehicle window.
Road journeys can become part of the experience, particularly when moving between Kigali, Volcanoes, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe.
I can also include hiking, cycling, kayaking or other outdoor experiences when those fit your interests. Visit Rwanda
I wouldn’t send a traveler to every national park simply because they’re available.
If you want mountain gorillas or golden monkeys, I would focus on Volcanoes.
If you want savannah wildlife and Big Five opportunities, I would look closely at Akagera.
If chimpanzees and rainforest biodiversity interest you, I would consider Nyungwe.
The official tourism information makes these distinctions clear, and I use them when deciding how to structure a trip. Visit Rwanda
Gorilla trekking permits are a major part of the trip, so I recommend confirming availability and the applicable permit category before finalizing the rest of the itinerary.
Current official tourism information shows that permit rates vary by traveler category and that special offers can apply under specific conditions. Visit Rwanda
I also recommend checking the current requirements and pricing at the time you book rather than relying on an old blog post or social-media recommendation.
I can make Rwanda much more interesting for travelers who enjoy culture, food, history, coffee, landscapes and community experiences.
Kigali can provide a completely different pace from the national parks, while Lake Kivu gives me an opportunity to add time around the water.
Rwanda’s tourism offering also includes cultural experiences, cycling, hiking, kayaking, canopy walks and other outdoor activities. Visit Rwanda
If seeing mountain gorillas is one of the experiences you’ve dreamed about for years, Rwanda deserves serious consideration.
I can build the itinerary around Volcanoes National Park and then decide whether additional experiences genuinely add value.
I wouldn’t add three more destinations simply to make the itinerary longer.
If you want to combine primates, savannah wildlife, mountains, culture and scenery in one relatively compact country, Rwanda can work particularly well.
I can move you from one type of landscape and wildlife experience to another without requiring you to cross enormous distances.
I often find Rwanda appealing for travelers who want an African wildlife experience but are nervous about complicated logistics.
I can create a structured itinerary that combines wildlife with comfortable accommodation, clear transfers and cultural experiences.
I would still explain the physical requirements of activities such as gorilla trekking before recommending them.
For couples, I can create a journey that balances adventure with comfort.
You might trek for gorillas one day, enjoy a beautiful lodge afterward and spend another day exploring Kigali or relaxing around Lake Kivu.
That mixture can make the trip feel like a holiday rather than a single-purpose expedition.
If you enjoy walking, hiking, cycling, kayaking or forest experiences, I can make Rwanda much more active than a conventional safari.
The country’s terrain naturally lends itself to outdoor exploration. Visit Rwanda
If wildlife is important but you also want to understand the country you’re traveling through, I can build in cultural experiences, Kigali, countryside journeys and time around Lake Kivu.
For me, these additions often give context to the wildlife experiences.
If your dream is several days of classic savannah game drives, huge plains, large herds and a safari dominated by vehicle-based wildlife viewing, I would compare Rwanda with Kenya or Tanzania.
Akagera provides a genuine safari experience, including Big Five opportunities, but Rwanda’s broader wildlife proposition is different because much of its appeal also comes from forests and primates. Visit Rwanda
I don’t want to tell someone that they should trek simply because gorillas are famous.
If steep, uneven or prolonged walking is likely to make the experience uncomfortable or unsafe for you, I would discuss alternatives rather than pretending the physical demands don’t matter.
Rwanda has beautiful Lake Kivu, but it isn’t an Indian Ocean beach destination.
If your ideal holiday involves tropical beaches and ocean swimming, I would look at Kenya’s coast, Zanzibar or another suitable coastal destination.
If you have limited time and only want to trek gorillas, I wouldn’t automatically recommend a long countrywide circuit.
I would concentrate the itinerary around Volcanoes National Park and add only what genuinely improves the trip.
I recommend Rwanda when you want a journey that goes beyond the traditional idea of a safari. I can give you mountain gorillas, but I can also give you savannah wildlife, chimpanzees, rainforest, mountains, culture, Kigali and Lake Kivu.
If gorilla trekking is your main reason for coming, I would build the trip around that experience first. If you have more time, I can then determine whether Akagera, Nyungwe, Kigali or Lake Kivu genuinely add something you will value.
I also want you to be realistic about the differences between Rwanda and destinations such as Kenya and Tanzania. Rwanda can give you Big Five experiences in Akagera, but I would not sell it to you as a copy of the Mara or Serengeti. Its strength is the combination of wildlife, primates, landscapes, culture and relatively varied experiences within one country. Visit Rwanda
The most important thing I can help you do is choose the right version of Rwanda. Your ideal trip may be a short gorilla experience, a luxury primate journey, a Rwanda-wide adventure or a combination of Rwanda with another East African destination.
You can browse my Rwanda tours below and compare the different ways I can structure the experience. If you already know your dates but aren’t sure which route makes sense, send me your dates, number of travelers, preferred comfort level and what you most want to experience.
